How many of you struggle with breakfast? Rather stay in bed for those extra 10 minutes? Just don’t feel hungry? Do you ever get bored of the usual selection of cornflakes, toast and vegemite, or fruit and yogurt?

As a Personal trainer, I have over the years often come across clients who don’t eat breakfast. Are you one of them of those people? Can you relate to any of these…..

“I don’t have time”

“I’m just not hungry then”

“I can’t possibly eat first thing in the morning”

“I don’t like cereal”

“I don’t want to get fat”

So ok, if you really wanted to lose 10 or more kilo’s, and I told you that one of the reasons you can’t lose weight is that you don’t eat breakfast! And would that be  enough to want to make you sit up and listen?

Right, so first of all ; breaking news…….

Breakfast is NOT about cereal.

I know! We’ve all been brought up on weetbix, right? Kiwi kids! Aussie kids! Well, the only reason we think we need cereal for breakfast is because that’s what we have been conditioned to think! Food is simply fuel. Fuel for your body. And if you put bad fuel in the tank, you get a bad ride. The same goes for your body. You feed your body processed, high sugar, rubbish, you will get rubbish from your body.

You can eat anything you like for that first meal of the day, as long as it contains adequate lean protein, good fat, and a low GI natural, unprocessed form of carbohydrate, then go ahead, eat whatever your heart desires.

In Asia, Scandinavia, and many other countries, you won’t find cornflakes on the breakfast table. Be inventive. Try some lean turkey burgers with mushrooms and tomatoes. Chicken soup with vegetables ; cottage cheese with berries, and nut granola ; protein pancakes ( or banana pancakes), Salmon, eggs and avocado on cauliflower mash. Berry smoothie.

See what I mean…think outside the square. There are numerous ideas…

Now, WHY do we need to eat breakfast, and why is it so important?

Breakfast is just that….break the fast. You have risen from your sleep (6-8 hours) and possibly haven’t eaten for 10-12 hours. Your body has used all glycogen levels and your metabolism is at a low level. If you launch into your day without eating, what is your body going to use for energy if you have no fuel in the tank. Probably muscle tissue, which is NOT what we want. Muscle tissue is needed to burn fat, so if we are depleting our muscle mass, then we are losing our efficiency to burn calories. And you will probably put on MORE weight. Not good.

So, by simply eating breakfast, we can kick start our metabolism for the day, and ensure that doesn’t happen.

Well, this is just a brief overview on the great debate of breakfast, but in a nutshell, EAT SOMETHING! Something good, nutritious, and full of fiber, protein, good fats, and clean.
