Group fitness classes have been around for a long time, since the days of aerobics, the legendary Jane Fonda Workout, and jazzercise.

Three decades on, group fitness has developed into many unique forms, and it has metamorphosed into a huge industry with men and women all over the world  participating in many different types and flavour of fitness class. There are now fitness classes to suit everyone; all ages and all fitness levels. These classes offer a variety of benefits, and they are a key part of the growing weight loss industry.

I have been teaching group fitness myself for over 20 years, and I love it. In this time, I have seen all the new fads come and go; I have worn the leg warmers, and I’ve worn hot pink g-string leotards with lime green bike pants underneath. I have done it all. For the last 17 years, I have been involved with teaching Les Mills classes, and I have learnt to encompass many different aspects of training within these classes.

Group fitness classes aren’t to everybody’s taste, and that’s fine, but countless people have come to enjoy fitness classes on a number of levels; they enjoy the sense of community and the social aspects that come with joining a class, they enjoy meeting with others to exercise and have fun, they enjoy letting out the frustrations of a stressful day, they enjoy laughing and joking while they lose weight, and they appreciate that joining a class helps them to fit exercise into their schedules, and motivates them to keep working out. Whatever the reason, group fitness is a phenomenal business, and it is an important part of many people’s  exercise routines.
If you are new to fitness and exercise, joining a group fitness class is a great place to start. It will give you the confidence and guidance you need to venture onto the gym floor and try things you have never done before, or that you never thought you could do. You will meet new people who will encourage you and make you feel part of something unique, people who tell you that you can do it, and who will support you when you are finding it tough. This encouragement, and the enjoyment factor that most fitness class members experience, will set you on the road to discovering the new you! I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many people through my fitness classes, and I’ve seen first hand how it has changed their lives. It’s fantastic.

Les Mills have an amazing variety of classes for every level of fitness, and they are continually developing new classes to meet the needs of many different people; from entry level to fitness freaks, from big to small, young to not-so-young, you name it. Their classes also include a wide range of different interests and styles; from dance style classes like Sh’bam to martial arts inspired classes like Body Combat, fitness classes like Body Attack, weights classes like Body Pump, and many more.

So, which group fitness class is for you? Well, there’s only one way to find out. Go and check out your local gym. Look for a gym that offers a great range of classes, partially Les Mills classes, and go try them all out. You will definitely find at least one that suits you, that meets your needs, and that gets you excited about exercise.
